What changes the cost of a robotic hysterectomy
Robotic vs laparoscopic vs open
Open hysterectomy: Rs 80,000-1,50,000. Laparoscopic: Rs 1,30,000-2,50,000. Robotic: Rs 2,00,000-4,00,000. The robotic premium is the cost of the robotic instruments plus equipment time.
Radical vs simple
Most womb (endometrial) cancers and non-cancer problems need a simple hysterectomy. A radical hysterectomy is mainly used for early cervical cancer, and occasionally for selected womb cancers that involve the cervix. It costs more than a simple hysterectomy because it also removes the tissue beside the cervix (parametrium) and the top of the vagina, usually with the pelvic lymph nodes. For cervical cancer, this operation is usually done as open surgery (see above), so ask for an open-surgery estimate as well.
Hospital stay
After a radical hysterectomy, the hospital stay is often about 3-4 days after robotic surgery and about 6-8 days after open surgery. The shorter stay partly offsets the equipment premium. For cervical cancer, a shorter stay is not a reason to choose robotic surgery: for most women open surgery remains the standard because it gives better cancer results.
Insurance coverage
Many cashless insurance policies cover robotic hysterectomy when it is medically justified for cancer, but some pay only up to the rate for open or keyhole surgery, leaving the difference to you. For non-cancer problems, coverage varies. PMJAY (Ayushman Bharat) covers eligible families up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year, but the robotic part may not be covered; confirm with the hospital before admission. The range covers the surgical or medical procedure plus standard hospital stay, anaesthesia, and routine pre-op investigations. It does NOT typically include: PET-CT (Rs 18,000-25,000), genetic/biomarker testing (Rs 25,000-60,000), maintenance therapy, or out-of-pocket travel and accommodation.
Will insurance or Ayushman Bharat (PMJAY) cover a robotic hysterectomy?
Most cashless cancer-care policies in India cover surgery for a diagnosed cancer under their standard benefits, but some pay only the non-robotic rate.
