Hipec Surgery Myths — Dr. Nishtha Tripathi Patel is an ESGO-certified gynaecological oncosurgeon offering expert hipec surgery myths care at Sterling Hospitals, KD Hospital, and Welcare Speciality Hospital in Ahmedabad.
HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) is one of the most misunderstood procedures in oncology. Below are 7 myths Dr. Nishtha hears repeatedly in consultations, and the evidence-based answers.

- 2. Myth: HIPEC is too painful to consider
- 3. Myth: HIPEC has a very low success rate

- 7. Myth: Recovery from HIPEC takes a year
Hipec surgery myths — 1. Myth: HIPEC is “experimental”
HIPEC has been performed worldwide for over 25 years and is included as a standard option in ESGO and NCCN guidelines for selected ovarian cancer cases. The landmark 2018 New England Journal of Medicine trial by Van Driel et al. demonstrated a clear survival benefit. It is not experimental — it is highly specialised.
2. Myth: HIPEC is too painful to consider
HIPEC combined with cytoreductive surgery is a major procedure, but modern enhanced-recovery protocols mean most patients are mobilised within 24-48 hours. Pain is well-controlled with multimodal analgesia. Hospital stay is typically 7-10 days, comparable to other major abdominal surgeries.
3. Myth: HIPEC has a very low success rate
In carefully selected patients (peritoneal disease that can be completely resected), HIPEC adds approximately 12 months of disease-free survival compared with surgery alone. Patient selection is everything — outcomes from HIPEC at high-volume centres differ dramatically from low-volume settings.
4. Myth: HIPEC costs are out of reach
The total cost in Ahmedabad ranges Rs 5-12 lakh including the procedure, hospital stay, and standard pre-op work-up. Most cashless insurance policies cover HIPEC under cancer surgery benefits. PMJAY covers eligible patients up to Rs 5 lakh.
5. Myth: HIPEC means no more chemotherapy needed
HIPEC is one component of treatment, not a substitute. Most patients still receive systemic chemotherapy before and/or after HIPEC. The HIPEC component specifically targets microscopic peritoneal disease that systemic chemotherapy alone cannot eradicate.
6. Myth: Only certain cancers benefit from HIPEC
HIPEC is most established for advanced ovarian cancer, primary peritoneal cancer, pseudomyxoma peritonei, and selected colorectal cancers with peritoneal spread. It is NOT appropriate for every cancer or every stage — patient selection requires a fellowship-trained team.
7. Myth: Recovery from HIPEC takes a year
Most patients return to light activities within 4-6 weeks and to normal life within 8-12 weeks. The recovery is comparable to other major abdominal surgeries with cytoreduction. Energy levels gradually return over 3-6 months.
